Project management case: technical services.

Our customer provides technical services to the construction services and utilities industries in Europe. In the last decennium the company has transformed from a subcontractor to a expertise business partner with specific expertise in ICT and electrical services. P36 Solutions trained and coached project leaders during the transformation process.

The technical services are offered on project basis or the basis of long term maintenance contracts. Usually the long term contracts are a follow up of the projects. Projects are therefore a key element in sales and they are tendered in a competitive market. The success in tendered projects is intertwined with the profitability of all operations. The company employs staff with excellent technical knowhow but there is room for improvement in the area of project management.

A specific programme had been developed to improve the knowledge and skills in project management. This programme contained four elements: learning the project management techniques, training of management skills, discussing cases and coaching on the job. The techniques and skills were trained in small groups. The target group of technical engineers is generally eager to learn, but not necessarily focused on aspects of time, money and communication. Basic theoretical concepts were shared and the emphasis was on the application of them. A sports event was used as a fictive project to make sure that we would not end up in technical discussions. Part of the exercises were physical and executed outside in order to keep attention.

During the case discussions the participants had the opportunity to introduce bottlenecks in existing projects. Depending on the situation the consultant was available for individual coaching on the job. The training and coaching programme resulted in more grip on the projects. Later on this enabled the organization to improve on their project tenders and the operational results.
